edit - For some reason I was having a lot of trouble modding beta 1.7.3 in the new launcher. Whenever I tried the manual way of copying the jar file and editing the json and such, it would always redownload the jar and delete my mods. The way I got it to work was by finding any existing jar/json file, such as the "Skin fix" one in this thread, and choosing that in the profile. It didn't redownload it then.
The only solution I have at the moment is to copy your b1.7.3.jar, paste it to your "\.minecraft\bin\" folder, rename it to "minecraft.jar", put the depth buffer fix in it and use Magic Launcher to launch Minecraft in a "classic" environment. This will run the modified minecraft.jar without overwriting it.I'm sure there is a more sophisticated fix to this, but my unfortunately my Java skills are limited. Sorry for the headache.

I will say that I do recognize those files... when you start a game in a beta version with the default launcher, those files appear in the "versions" folder, I believe. However, they disappear when you close the Minecraft client. Apparently that's why beta versions can't be played offline, cause it literally downloads those every time :/. What an inefficient way of porting the old versions to the new launcher.
Are you trying to load the depth buffer fix through magic launcher? Because that doesn't work. You have to set up beta 1.7.3 as a classic environment and put the mod directly in the minecraft.jar, like how I showed Mincegamer.
*"So what makes this one different?"-Well, from the get-go I wanted to introduce specific features in different updates, so purists can stop at whatever update feels best for them. That way this can also serve as an "ultimate" beta experience for as many people as possible.Because of this, the first several patches consist almost entirely of bugfixes and quality of life features for Beta 1.7.3, meticulously fixing as many bugs as I could find, polishing the game itself, and keeping everything else relatively unmodified and pure. As such, B2B1.7.8 is in a way the ultimate way to experience "vanilla" Minecraft Beta 1.7 in its most perfect form.
